Desmond Tutu was born in 1931 in Klerksdorp, Transvaal, South Africa. After three years as a high school teacher he began to study theology, being ordained as a priest in 1960.

In 1999, Tutu was invited to give the annual Wilberforce Lecture and used the occasion to praise the people of the city for their traditional support of freedom and for standing with the people of South Africa in their fight against apartheid. He was also presented with the freedom of the city.
